How It Works
Power-to-weight ratio is the most important number for predicting acceleration. A Miata with 180 HP at 2,300 lbs (12.8 lbs/HP) accelerates similarly to a sedan with 300 HP at 3,800 lbs (12.7 lbs/HP). Supercars achieve under 6 lbs/HP, sports cars 8-12, average cars 14-18, and trucks/SUVs 18-25. Torque-to-weight is more relevant for towing and low-speed response. Removing weight is often cheaper than adding power.
